According to the Webtorials 2014 Wide Area Networking State-of-the-Market Report, IT professionals rely upon their wide-area network (WAN) to improve application performance and, more specifically, support real-time applications. However, 87 percent of IT professionals claim their WAN has a negative impact on business-critical application performance, which results in lost productivity, lost revenue, lost customers, regulatory compliance issues and a tarnished reputation.
A significant portion of WAN traffic, especially enterprise applications, runs over Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) in order to connect data centers and remote offices. With built-in support for Quality of Service, MPLS is capable of prioritizing latency-sensitive traffic, a key advantage over broadband internet. While use of MPLS is expected to increase, survey respondents have serious concerns about the cost and uptime related to these services.
Making the situation worse is the disconnect between IT and senior management, as four out of five IT professionals believe senior management doesn’t recognize the strategic value of the WAN, according to a survey from Talari Networks. As a result, most survey respondents expected their WAN budgets to decrease or stay the same.
WAN optimization can help organizations gain more performance out of their existing resources. WAN optimization automatically monitors network conditions, data transmission and application performance, and then chooses the right combination of techniques and technologies to keep data flowing smoothly and conserve bandwidth. It utilizes techniques such as data de-duplication, compression, traffic shaping, caching and protocol spoofing to optimize data flow and improve application response times over WAN links without adding expensive bandwidth. A WAN optimization system is installed into the existing IT infrastructure without any reconfiguration of applications or management software.
Talari’s Mercury Appliances take WAN performance to the next level. Talari makes it possible to aggregate MPLS, broadband Internet, ATM, Frame Relay and other technologies to boost performance and reliability at a lower cost than most single-provider WANs. With Talari’s patented Adaptive Private Network technology, these highly scalable appliances provide a network of conduits, each of which is comprised of multiple WAN links and controls, enabling organizations to better optimize network resources between the data center and remote locations.
