Research firm IDC predicts that the market for unified communications (UC) and collaboration solutions will reach $48.3 billion in 2023, representing a 7.1 percent compound annual growth rate for the 2019 to 2023 period. Organizations of all size and in all business segments are looking to implement UC solutions to take advantage of their advanced capabilities and flexible deployment options.
In fact, IDC Senior Research Analyst Rich Costello says that the decision to migrate legacy voice platforms to UC and IP telephony is “past due.” The planning for this transition should already be well under way. To assist organizations that are behind in this effort, IDC recently published a Marketscape entitled “Worldwide Unified Communications and Collaboration 2019 Vendor Assessment.” The report provides advice to executives, IT decision-makers and line-of-business personnel along with in-depth assessments of nine key vendors.
Before selecting a UC solution, organizations need to determine whether to deploy it on-premises or in a public or private cloud. Many organizations are turning to cloud-based UC-as-a-Service (UCaaS) solutions because they reduce the cost, complexity and risk of migration as long as security and compliance concerns are adequately addressed. UCaaS solutions can also scale easily to support increasing numbers of users, and enable anytime, anywhere access.
However, IDC encourages organizations to consider all deployment options and notes that a hybrid approach offers a number of business benefits. The research firm estimates that more than 60 percent of UC deployments blend on-premises and cloud-based solutions, enabling organizations to leverage existing investments and maintain a degree of control while quickly gaining access to new features.
When evaluating solutions, organizations should look beyond basic telephony functionality and consider advanced capabilities that can deliver competitive advantages. Leading solutions can help boost productivity through a more intuitive user interface that incorporates contextual team collaboration tools. Increasingly, UC platforms also offer the ability to integrate voice and collaboration features with line-of-business applications and contact center platforms. Artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities are slowly being integrated into UC to create adaptive solutions.
The IDC MarketScape report positions Mitel as a “Leader” in the UC market for 2019. IDC lauded Mitel for its technology roadmap and the continued evolution of its broad portfolio of solutions. Specifically, the IDC report praises Mitel’s:
